Hexagram text

Source reading and stance

Core image

This hexagram is about coming together: people, forces, attention drawn into one field. Something collects, and a gathering forms. That can lend strength, make ritual possible, and concentrate a direction. But it asks for a true center; without one, a gathering is only a crowd.

Tension

The tension lies between real gathering and mere crowding. People can stand close without anything truly cohering. So the question here is not only how many come together, but what they come together around.

Distortion

Gathering distorts when it becomes mass without measure. Then people seek their reassurance in numbers, in nearness, in the warmth of the group. The center grows harder to see precisely because so much hangs around it.

Stance

Bring together what belongs together, but keep the center in plain sight. Hold to shape, to seriousness, to a middle that can carry weight. A good gathering thickens not only people but purpose.

Closing line

What truly gathers orders itself around something larger than the group.

Changing lines of hexagram 45

  • Line 1. At the start the gathering is still searching, still unfinished. The pull to come together is felt, but the shape has not arrived. One honest connection is worth more here than a show of size.
  • Line 2. Here a truer gathering forms on its own, because people follow what actually draws them. Less needs to be staged than you thought. Sincerity gathers more quietly than ambition.
  • Line 3. At this point there is nearness without a real bed to rest in. People stand together, but the center does not yet carry. That leaves the gathering open to emptiness, and to disappointment.
  • Line 4. Here the gathering takes shape through right ordering. One takes responsibility for the field without making oneself its purpose. Only then can what has gathered begin to carry something.
  • Line 5. This line shows a center that draws people in through being trustworthy. They come not by attraction alone, but because something holds. That gives the gathering its dignity.
  • Line 6. When one clings to what has gathered out of fear of losing it, grief or cramp sets in. Then coming together becomes an attempt to hold off decline. This line asks for sincerity even when one is moved.
