Core image
This hexagram shows two natures looking in different directions. There is contact, but no overlap. The picture is sharp: two forces are not hostile enough for open war, yet not akin enough for easy unity. So difference makes itself felt in everything between them.
Tension
The pull here is to either deny the opposition or blow it up into a full rupture. One wants agreement too fast, or separation too fast. But some difference is a lasting structure, not a fault to be fixed. Not everything that fails to align is therefore wrong.
Distortion
Opposition goes wrong when difference is turned straight into enmity, or smoothed over into a unity that lies. Then the relation loses its truth. What is other does not have to be made the same.
Stance
Keep the relation small and exact. Look for where work is still possible without denying the difference. Wide unity is rarely reachable here, but a clear partial bond is. Opposition asks for measure in how close you stand.

Some relations only start to work once no one forces them into a harmony that isn't there.

Changing lines of hexagram 38
- Line 1. At the start the opposition need not be inflated. There is room to let the difference simply stand. That spares damage no one needed.
- Line 2. Here a small, direct contact is possible across a wider difference. It is modest but real. Not every bond has to be broad to be true.
- Line 3. At this point the opposition grates hard against the shape. You feel blocked, crossed, badly received. This line asks you to bear it without staging the escalation.
- Line 4. Here someone is found who, inside the opposition, still makes a real line of contact possible. That breaks the isolation. The meeting is narrow but clean.
- Line 5. Even in strong opposition, mutual recognition can arise. Not because the difference dissolves, but because something deeper stays trustworthy. That is what makes real work possible.
- Line 6. Read through suspicion too long, the other soon looks monstrous or deceitful. Then you see wrong. This line asks for a last correction of what you projected.
